Guess who's going to be at Fanime over Memorial Day weekend?

:iconrabid-potato: and I will be tabling in the Artist Alley at table #17 Friday through Monday. Another attendee made a really amazing and easy to navigate Artist Alley Map, which is here, and I recommend using this over the official map to find me. According to said map we're in the G block :)

I'll have my one-shot minicomics, prints, on-site commissions, a limited number of Erstwhile books, and a select number of original pages from Erstwhile for sale (such as some of the watercolor pages from Death of the Little Hen). If you have specific requests for original pages, feel free to note me or email me by Wednesday night and I'll be happy to bring the page you're interested in :)

Other than preparing for convention stuff, I've been hard at work on my usual projects. Missing Monday is nearing the end of Chapter 3, I've recently launched my "Year in Greyscale" project for Littlest Elle, annnd I'm hard at work illustrating my next fairytale for Erstwhile! (Hint: it is more obscure than any other tale I've done and it involves magical transformation)

Why hello there! :D

I enjoyed getting to chat with you and to get to draw such fun characters (thank you for referring Allison my way as well, you guys had my favorite commissions of the weekend <3). I'm still kind of sleep deprived but I look forward to looking through your art once I rest up/wake up a bit!

Hey Elle, I am curious, how did you get involved into doing webcomics and conventions?

I decided that I wanted to do it, so I've pushed myself :) That is the secret. Other artists I admire have the same secret.

The hardest part of making comics is to be reliable. You need to be able to commit to your story and to be able to update on a regular schedule which means making time to work on the comic even when you don't feel like it/when you're sick/when things are busy/etc. Seriously, this is the most important part. If you make and update your comic on a regular basis you will eventually find readers and your skills will improve and you'll get where you want to go.

I also have a rule of no giving up after 3 chapters. With me, I get a few chapters in and then I get this great new idea that makes me want to delete everything and start over BETTER. The thing is, this will happen again once you rewrite it because your skills are improving and you see ways to be better that you didn't know before (even on the second reboot!). You'll just get stuck in a loop where you rewrite the same part of your story over and over again. I think it's better to save those new ideas for a second project instead :)

I recommend starting small. You don't have to share it, but make journal comics or daily drawings every day for a month. Make an 8 page minicomic. Do a 24 hour comic. But start with some small project like that and finish it, just to show yourself you can do it. Then tackle something bigger once you have that confidence.

As for cons, most are pretty easy to get into if you register the minute reg opens up (the bigger/more competitive the con, the more likely tables will sell out within an hour or two. Less intense cons usually only sell out in a month). Some cons require you to be at a certain skill level to table, so you might need to start at smaller cons while you build your skill level up :)

I recommend having at least some of your merchandise ready before you sign up for a con. So having 3 images you want to make prints of, or having a minicomic, or having button designs, or whatever. THEN sign up. The worst if is you pay for a convention table and time gets away from you and you don't have anything prepared to sell.

Cons can be expensive, as well. I recommend getting a buddy (or buddies!) and sharing space together so that it's more affordable.

Aiee, wall of text answers, sorry ^_^;; Does that help?

Oh yeah for sure. Thanks for taking the time too. Small projects huh? That's actually a bit hard for me because I have such complex ideas lol. How do you go about printing stuff? I have a regular Canon printer/scanner and it prints fine. Not the best printer because it doesn't do Xerox images but it works.

Yes, small projects. Start small, complete small things, work your way up :)

I'm new to prints, but printing on your own computer can work. Going to a copy shop is also another way, depends on what you want to make. But try small runs of things, like 5 or fewer of each design to start and see what people like.
